Where we Work

CHAD, Central Africa:

Chad was selected as CFK's first country of intervention due to it's extreme poverty (167th out of 177 countries on the United Nations Human Development Index). Cited by Transparency International as most corrupt, Chad faces tremendous governance problems and struggles to translate oil revenues into opportunities for the poor and downtrodden.

Context

Over the past 3 years the country has once again fallen victim to instability. Despite a popular cry for democracy, the President changed the constitution to retain his seat at the head of the country. Deserters regrouped along the Chadian-Sudan border vowing to displace him. Cross-border attacks have led to further insecurities and intensified animosity between Chad and Sudan. Chadians are being murdered and displaced within their own country and fear has kept the general population from taking action... Read more

Education

In the past, conflict and war in this fragile state paralyzed the government's ability to sustain a functional school system, precipitating the spontaneous organization of parent association (APE) who to this day fund the majority of school expenses and 60% of all school teachers in Chad ...  Orphans and Vulnerable Children (OVC)

Children in Chad are some of the most at-risk children in the world. CFK defines orphaned and vulnerable children as children under the age of 18 having lost one or two parents and at risk of not receiving an education. In 2000, 65.5 % of all school age children in Chad were working instead of attending school (2001 UNICEF). Reports indicate that child trafficking occurs inside the country... Read more  

Summary of Peace Agreements

March 13th, 2008: OIC Summit "Dakar Agreement" between Chad and Sudan (facilitated by the Government of Senegal).

October 25th, 2007: "Syrte Agreement" between the GOC and 4 major rebel groups (UFDD, RFC, CNT and UFDD-F) (facilitated by the Libyan Government) - IN FRENCH

August 13th, 2007: Electoral reform agreement (commonly refered to as the "August 13th Agreement") between the GOC and the political parties (facilitated by the European Union) - IN FRENCH

February 8th, 2006: "Tripoli Agreement" between the Government of Chad and the Government of Sudan (facilitated by the Governments of Libyan and Congo)
